Instagram Reels

Instagram Reels are 90-second short, snappy videos that users create and share on Instagram.

What are Instagram Reels?

If you’ve spent any time on Instagram recently, you’ve likely noticed those short, snappy videos that grab your attention as you scroll through your feed. These are Instagram Reels—Instagram’s answer to TikTok, and they’re more than just a fleeting trend. Launched in 2020, Reels allow users to create and share videos up to 90 seconds long, packed with music, filters, and creative editing tools. While they started as a 15-second video feature, the time limit has since expanded, allowing for even more creativity.

How long can Instagram Reels be?

Instagram Reels can be anywhere from 15 seconds to 15 minutes in length. However, it depends on whether you’re editing directly within the app or uploading a video:

  • When filming a video and using a reel template within the Instagram app, users can choose from various specific durations—15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, and 90 seconds. Everything created within the app will cap at the 90-second mark, and you won’t be able to film additional clips within the app.
  • If you upload a pre-recorded video, it can be up to 15 minutes long, though the algorithm tends to favor shorter Reels.

Can you upload longer Instagram Reels?

Yes, you can upload any video up to 15 minutes, and it will automatically be turned into a reel. However, you might want to keep them under 90 seconds. According to Instagram’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, the algorithm favors shorter Reels, and those that go beyond the 90-second mark may not receive the same level of distribution. This doesn’t mean you can’t create longer content, but for maximum engagement, shorter Reels are often more effective.

Why are Instagram Reels so popular?

Instagram Reels have quickly become a favorite for both users, creators, and businesses. The feature isn’t just about hopping on trends; it’s a powerful tool for boosting engagement. A HypeAuditor analysis of over 70 million Instagram posts revealed that Reels have the highest estimated reach (33.8%) among every other content type on the platform, and they’re designed to keep you watching.

Reels cater to our love for bite-sized, entertaining content, making them perfect for capturing attention quickly, and holding it.
