Threads is an app mainly used for “sharing text updates and joining public conversations,” according to Meta, but it’s done in more of a community-driven and intimate setting.

X/Twitter was mainly designed for broadcasting messages, engaging in public conversations, and following trending topics, making it ideal for wide-reaching interactions and real-time updates. The other major difference is that since March 2024, Threads has started to allow U.S. users to connect their accounts to the Fediverse, a decentralized network of interconnected social media platforms and other online services. The Fediverse (federation + universe) includes social platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky. On the other hand, X has remained a centralized network, which means that all data and interactions occur within its own ecosystem.
