Role description

About Buffer

We create social media and brand-building software for small businesses, creators, and individuals. Our mission is to provide essential tools to help small businesses get off the ground and grow. Through exceptional customer service and uplifting content, we help our customers believe they can succeed and do good along the way.

Buffer is a fully distributed team, and we’ve always aimed to do things a little differently at Buffer. Since the early days, we’ve focused on building one of the most unique and fulfilling workplaces by rethinking a lot of traditional practices. We also default to transparency, so you can read all about our metrics, and our successes and failures along the way on our Transparency Dashboard.

We're united by Buffer's values, and we hire and work from all over the world. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive work environment, and we are building a culture where underrepresented groups are welcome and can flourish. Please note that we do travel to work together in person once or twice per year, and those events are highly encouraged to build deeper connections among our small team.

As you get to know Buffer and consider joining the journey, feel free to read more from Kirsti and Sabreen as they share their first experiences with Buffer, as well as from Hailley, who captured why she still calls Buffer home after 8+ years.

About the role

As a Senior Community Manager at Buffer, you'll have the unique opportunity to be both at the heart of community interactions and moving community strategy forward, shaping how Buffer shows up across Discord, Reddit, social media platforms, and community programming. This role combines strategic community building, content creation, and program management, with plenty of room to experiment and try things that don't scale as we discover what works best for our growing community.

You'll work as a partner alongside our Customer Advocacy, Marketing, and Product teams, translating community conversations into actionable product feedback, creating content strategies that amplify authentic community voices, and designing scalable programming that drives both results and meaningful connections.

What you'll do

Be the heart of Buffer's Discord community: You'll be actively present in our Discord server, facilitating conversations, welcoming new members, moderating discussions, and creating an environment where creators feel supported and connected to each other and Buffer.

Lead the expansion into Reddit: You will be the driver of our expansion into adding Reddit as a community where Buffer is actively present and creates genuine connections. This is a new channel for Buffer with a lot of potential.

Design and execute community programming: Plan and run virtual events, AMAs, creator spotlights, challenges, contests, and other initiatives that bring community members together and create opportunities for learning and connection. Build scalable systems that enable consistent programming without constant reinvention.

Drive authentic social media engagement at scale: Lead our social media community engagement strategy across LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, and other platforms where Buffer users gather, ensuring every interaction reflects Buffer's values and brand.

Lead beta and power user programs: Design and own our beta and power user programs. Ensure these users are heard and valued throughout the product development process. Develop advocates who amplify launch moments.

Create community-focused content: Develop social media content, videos, and other materials that highlight community stories, showcase user success, share insights from Discord conversations, and demonstrate the real impact of community connection. Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure community content connects to broader marketing objectives.

Surface community insights: Act as the voice of the community within Buffer, sharing feedback with Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams, and ensuring community perspectives are heard in the right conversations.

Helpful Skills and Experience

Proven community-building experience with measurable impact: You have 5+ years of experience building and scaling online communities, with a track record of driving key metrics like engagement rate, retention, and member growth.

You use Buffer and create your own content: Like every Buffer teammate, you're on your own creator journey and use Buffer to manage your content. You maintained an active social presence, understand the daily challenges creators and small businesses face, and can relate to our community's experiences because you live them yourself.

Strong content strategy and creation skills: You've created diverse content formats (written, video, social) and understand how to craft narratives that resonate with different audiences. You know how to translate community stories into compelling content that drives both engagement and business goals.

You're a natural connector who thrives on human interaction: You genuinely enjoy meeting new people, facilitating conversations, and creating environments where others feel welcome and valued.

Proactive problem-solving and opportunity identification: You don't wait to be told what needs fixing—you spot challenges and opportunities early, propose solutions, and take ownership of outcomes. You're energized by ambiguous situations where you can define the path forward.

Excellent cross-functional collaboration: You've successfully partnered with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and other teams to achieve shared goals. You know how to advocate for community needs while understanding business constraints and priorities.

Deep understanding of the creator economy: You stay current with platform changes, creator trends, and the evolving needs of creators and small businesses. You can anticipate where the industry is heading and position Buffer's community strategy accordingly.

Demonstrated leadership and mentorship: While this role may not have direct reports initially, you've mentored peers, led projects, and demonstrated the ability to elevate others' work through feedback and guidance.
